Protecting children begins with acting in solidarity and responsibility. Around the world, research and lived experience show that orphanage volunteering can unintentionally cause harm by separating children from their families and communities, rather than supporting them to stay together. These practices can create serious safeguarding risks and affect children’s emotional wellbeing and sense of belonging.
As a global Federation, youth-led exchange and volunteering network, we believe young people can be a force for positive change when their actions are guided by respect, learning, and care. For us, standing with children means upholding their rights, listening to community voices, and choosing approaches that create lasting, positive impact.
We know many young people are motivated to support children and contribute to social justice. That commitment is powerful. We encourage volunteers to channel it into programmes that strengthen families, support education, and build community-based initiatives.
